It's quite interesting that majority of the parents don't really see the significance of early childhood education in a child's educational journey, fortunately we as a group of this newly created blog hereby like to enlighten the entire society or countries abroad on the significance of early childhood education.
Definition of early childhood education
ECE refers to a wide range of activities put in place to promote a child's cognitive and social development before he/she formally starts attending pre-school. it is both formal and informal and usually occurs from birth to the age of around 8 years.
Types at ECE
1. Daycare/ Childcare center
These are institutions that provide care and supervision to mostly infants and/or young children during the daytime while their parents are at work. Daycare centers typically incorporate educational elements into their programs and are therefore considered as ECE facilities.
2. Kindergarten
This is a program for children aged 4-6 years old, that offers developmentally appropriate learning opportunities to help build the child's social and academic skills. Kindergarten also serves to prepare children for transition into primary school.
3. Nannies and Babysitters
Nannies and babysitters are individuals that are hired to provide care in the child's home. They engage children in play-based learning, hands-on activities, and creating teaching moments from everyday interactions.
4. Montessori
Montessori is a method of ECE that encourages independent thought and action and critical thinking, while fostering social-emotional and intellectual growth. The teacher of Montessori observes, guides and supervises the learning of the children.
5.Home-based care
This involves the care and education of a small group of children in a caregiver's home. Home based daycare is usually cheaper than other facilities of early childhood education.
6. Reggio Emilia
This approach of ECE promotes the image of the child as capable, creative and powerful, with the desire to connect with others, engage in learning, and explore materials in the environment. It is a child-led learning.
7. Preschool
Preschool programs help children to develop a wide range of skills that make them ready to learn when they start school. It helps children learn through play. The main focus of preschool is to make children aware of basics such as letters, colors and numbers.
8. Language immersion programs/ preschool
These are programs where children learn a second language e.g., German often with a focus on bilingualism. science suggests that bilingualism increases gray matter in the brain, leading to the development of more brain cells.
